Couple swapping, also known as swinging, is one of the oldest forms of consensual non-monogamy. If you are thinking about it, this guide helps you understand what it is, the forms it can take and how to take your first steps without rushing.

What is couple swapping?

Couple swapping is a meeting between two couples, or more, who mutually agree to share intimate moments. The key word, as always, is consent: from all four people, all the time.

Unlike cuckold or hotwife dynamics, where there is usually one outside person (the bull), in swapping everyone is part of a couple and the relationship is more symmetrical.

Types of swapping

There isn't just one way to swing. The most common forms:

  • soft swap: kissing and touching only, nothing further;
  • full swap: each partner has an intimate experience with the other couple;
  • same room: each with their own partner, but together, maybe watching each other;
  • separate rooms: the swap happens in different rooms, less common for beginners.

Many couples start with same-room play or a soft swap and only later decide whether to go further.

Before you start: really talk about it

Swapping involves both of you directly, so there are a lot of questions to ask:

  • what excites us, and what scares us?
  • what is a yes, a maybe, a no for each of us?
  • what do we do if one of us feels uncomfortable?
  • how will we talk about it afterwards?

Write the answers down. Rules can change, but only together and never in the middle of a meeting.

How to find the right couple

Chemistry between two couples is harder to find than with a single person: all four of you need to click. A few tips:

  1. A clear profile: who you are, what you are looking for, what you are not.
  2. Four-way chat: it helps when both partners write, not just one.
  3. Video call or a drink: before anything else.
  4. No pressure: if the chemistry isn't there, part kindly.

On BullWife you can find couples near you, read their limits and talk in a chat with all four of you.

Swingers club or private meeting?

Many couples get into swapping by visiting a swingers club: a protected environment with clear rules where you can simply watch. Others prefer a private meeting with a couple they met online. Both are fine: what matters is feeling free to leave at any moment.

The golden rules

  • no means no, even halfway through the evening;
  • protection, always;
  • go easy on the alcohol: it clouds judgement and consent;
  • discretion: no photos, no names;
  • aftercare: time for the two of you to talk about how it went.

For the first date, the same advice applies as in our first meeting safety guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are swinging and cuckolding the same thing?

No. In swinging two couples meet and the relationship is symmetrical; in cuckolding there is usually one outside person who meets her. Read Cuckold meaning.

Do we have to do a full swap?

No. Many couples stick to soft swap or same-room play and are perfectly happy.

What if jealousy shows up afterwards?

It happens, and it is normal. Talk about it calmly and, if you need to, take a break. Read more in Jealousy and compersion.
